From my experience working with Real Estate Agents, plus my observations driving around neighborhoods traveling to my real estate photo shoots, the vast majority of yard signs out there are the step-into-the-ground variety. These signs have a host of benefits, like being easy to transport and install.
There are however alternative sign types. As an example, Kristi Ryan of RE/MAX 100 uses signs that hang from posts that are dug into the ground, or “post-signs.” There are many practical advantages to using post signs: the signs are easier to read as they are at eye-level, not knee-level; they are harder to steal or vandalize; the signs wont get knocked-over easily; they don’t need to be re-positioned after snow-fall; they will be mowed-around, rather than mowed-over; the signs are more substantial making them easier to spot; and in election season, they will still stand-out from the many-many step-in-the-ground yard signs that pop-up on front-lawns throughout the city.
There is more to it than just these practical advantages… in my opinion, Kristi has the best For Sale Yard Signs in town!
Why? When I see that “RE/MAX-red” post driving around, I automatically think of “Kristi Ryan of RE/MAX 100” — it has become hard-wired into my brain! For me, its just like spotting the “Coke-red” and flowing white font on a billboard that makes me think of Coca Cola. Or, getting a glimpse of the “Golden Arches” as you drive along the interstate, it triggers my thoughts towards McDonalds. I have spotted Kristi’s listings, while not intentionally looking for them, driving at 35-40mph along a busy four lane road — that is the power of branding!
What else do post signs communicate over step-in-the-ground yard signs? Words like “quality” “stability” “longevity” & “reliability” come to mind — all qualities that a Realtor would love to be associated with their brand, all qualities a home buyer or seller is looking for in a Real Estate Agent! Plus, how good would this post-sign look with a big “SOLD” sign-rider added to it — reinforcing the worth of all of the great qualities just listed. Compare that to a step-in-the-ground sign that has been kicked-in and knocked-over — what words come to mind in that scenario?
I don’t know all the costs involved in post-signs vs. the alternatives — if someone reading this does, please share in the comments — but taking a bigger-picture view, seeing the cost of a “For Sale” sign not just as advertising a new listing, but as helping to create a quality brand for a Real Estate Agent’s business that will contribute to one’s overall marketing of themselves as a leading Agent, the extra dollars may be money well spent!
